If dust wins, you see falling output, rising filter differential, eroded blades and unplanned outages. Each forced wash or compressor repair is lost production, and on an islanded mine a sudden inlet trip can black out your whole process plant.
USP&E as Your Guide for Dust-Proof Mine Power
We know how quickly dust turns a good turbine into a maintenance problem on a mine. USP&E has guided energy projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified and work under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Size Your Inlet Filtration to Pit Dust
Start by measuring the dust you actually have: particle size, concentration, seasonal storms, wind direction from haul roads and crushers, and humidity that can turn fines into cake. Those numbers decide the filter class, the number of stages and whether you need self-cleaning pulse filters, weather hoods, inertial separators or coalescers in front of the fine filters.
Place the inlet away from crushers, stockpiles and haul roads, and raise it above the worst dust layer if you can. Seal the inlet house carefully, because a small bypass leak lets unfiltered air reach the compressor no matter how good the filters are. Your filter choice and inlet location belong in the same design file as your turbine selection. Plan filter access and storage too, because changing elements in a dust storm without a safe platform is how corners get cut.
Bridge With a Remanufactured GE Frame 6B While Filtration Matures
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B can carry base load while inlet-house design, gas treatment or a later block are completed. Check its records, reman scope, controls condition and preservation, and inspect the compressor for existing erosion. Then fit an inlet system designed for your mine rather than the one it had at its previous site.
Natural gas engines often cope better with dusty air and can cover camp loads, essential auxiliaries or black-start duty. Used or new gas turbines can be compared on the same basis: how much dust each tolerates, how filters are changed without a shutdown and how washing affects your availability.
Plan Modular FX-45 Blocks on a Dusty Concession
As pits deepen and processing expands, some concessions start hosting compute loads, bringing data-centre power plants beside your plant. Reserve upwind space for future inlets, gas treatment, electrical yards and roads, so later blocks breathe cleaner air and do not sit downwind of a new crusher.
The planning reference for that capacity is the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028. If a campus grows on your concession, the same team can carry the work into EPC and O&M, keeping filtration standards, washing routines and spares consistent across every block.
Why owners choose USP&E
USP&E is a full-service engineering, EPC and O&M company, not a broker. One team designs, builds and runs your plant, so nothing falls between contracts.

USP&E took over a 100+ MW plant of 15 Caterpillar CM32 engines, restored availability to about 95% and cut maintenance cost per engine by 66%.
Your path from first call to reliable power
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share dust data, site layout and load profile under NDA. 2. Receive an inlet filtration and equipment option set. 3. Commission with filter monitoring and hand over to accountable O&M.
- Map mine dust sources, ambient extremes, inlet losses, load profile, and outage costs against candidate gas turbine generators.
- Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used or new gas turbines, natural gas engines, and a future modular block against the filtration matrix.
- Review current equipment in USP&E live inventory and request records, inspection findings, controls status, and logistics dimensions.
- Reserve civil and electrical interfaces for the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028.
- Document filtration class, pulse-cleaning routines, SCADA alarms, load-shed tables, operator training, spares, and O&M responsibilities in one matrix.
- Complete permits, funding, fuel agreements, and commissioning rehearsals before final equipment selection.
Common questions
Why does dust matter so much for your mining gas turbines?
USP&E treats dust as a core design issue because abrasive particles erode compressor blades, foul components and clog filters. On a mine, poor filtration means falling output, frequent washing and unplanned outages, and on an islanded system one inlet trip can stop your entire process plant.
Can a remanufactured GE Frame 6B cope with mine dust?
USP&E can prepare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B for dusty mines by fitting an inlet system sized to your dust, checking the compressor for erosion and setting filter monitoring. With the right filtration it can carry base load reliably while later capacity is planned and built.
Where are USP&E offices that support your African mine power?
USP&E supports African mines from Johannesburg and Cape Town, where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit close to your sites. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi supports China supply chain and manufacturing.
Has USP&E delivered mining power projects before?
USP&E has delivered mining power across Africa, including supplying 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies include the Kinross Tasiast backup power station in Mauritania and a Golden Pride controls upgrade in Tanzania that removed harmonic distortion.
Is USP&E a broker?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power stations, so the people who design your inlet filtration remain accountable for your turbines staying clean and available through every dry season.
How fast can USP&E respond to your dust and filtration request?
USP&E can begin as soon as you share dust data, site layout, load profile and fuel information. Engineers review inlet location and filter options first, then equipment and logistics, and timing depends on data quality, equipment availability and the delivery route to your mine.
Do natural gas engines handle dusty mine air better?
USP&E often pairs natural gas engines with turbines on dusty mines because engines generally tolerate dust better and suit camp loads, auxiliaries and black-start duty. Combining both gives your operators a flexible fleet when a turbine is offline for washing or filter changes.
What should your O&M cover for dust and inlet filtration?
USP&E builds dust-aware O&M around filter differential alarms on SCADA, pulse-cleaning checks, inlet house inspections, compressor washing, borescope inspections and filter stock levels. Each alarm has a named responder, so your night shift acts before rising differential becomes a trip.
