If grid-code and island-mode behaviour are not designed in, your turbines may trip with the utility, the mill stops mid-batch and restarting the plant takes hours. That means lost tonnes, damaged equipment and a utility relationship strained by every disturbance your plant causes or fails to survive.
USP&E Helps You Run Strong on a Weak Grid
We understand that African mines often have to be their own utility. USP&E has guided energy projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers have designed and operated mine power systems that run grid-connected and islanded. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Let Grid Code and Island Mode Decide Your Design
Start with the facts of your connection: the utility’s fault level at your point of supply, voltage and frequency ranges, how often the feeder trips and how long outages last. Ask the utility for its grid code requirements on ride-through, reactive power and protection. Weak grids amplify every motor start, so a study of your largest loads starting on a weak feeder is essential.
Then decide how your plant should behave when the grid fails. Most mines want the turbines to separate cleanly and keep critical loads running in island mode. That needs a fast, reliable islanding scheme, governors and voltage regulators tuned for isolated operation and a load-shed table that drops non-essential loads before frequency collapses.
Plan resynchronisation too. When the grid returns, your plant must check voltage, frequency and phase angle before reconnecting, and operators need a clear procedure for when to reconnect and who authorises it.
Bridge With a Remanufactured GE Frame 6B While Studies Mature
Grid studies and utility approvals can take months. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B can provide island capacity in the meantime if its governor and excitation system can handle large motor starts on an isolated bus. Check its step-load capability, controls status and inspection records before you commit.
Natural gas engines respond quickly to load steps and are often used alongside turbines in island mode to absorb mill starts. Comparing used or new gas turbines and engines on step-load response, fuel and maintenance helps you build a plant that holds frequency when it matters.
Phase Toward Modular FX-45 on Grid-Constrained Mines
As your mine expands, and as some mining regions attract data-centre power plants, demand on a weak grid will grow. Plan your electrical yard, protection and islanding scheme for the end state, so new blocks join without repeating the grid study from scratch.
The planning reference for later blocks is the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028. USP&E carries grid studies, controls and turbines into EPC and O&M or mine O&M, with sync-check settings, load-shed tables and island drills visible to your control room operators.
Why owners choose USP&E
USP&E is a full-service engineering, EPC and O&M company, not a broker. One team designs, builds and runs your plant, so nothing falls between contracts.

Your path from first call to reliable power
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your utility data, single-line diagram and load list under NDA. 2. Get a grid-code and island-mode study with turbine options and EPC and O&M scope. 3. Build, commission and operate with island drills owned by one team.
- Map mine grid-code clauses, feeder fault levels, island load tables, and outage costs against candidate gas turbine generators.
- Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used or new gas turbines, natural gas engines, and a future modular block against the island matrix.
- Review current equipment in USP&E live inventory and request records, inspection findings, controls status, and logistics dimensions.
- Reserve civil and electrical interfaces for the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028.
- Document ride-through class, sync-check, SCADA island flags, load-shed tables, operator training, spares, and O&M responsibilities in one matrix.
- Complete permits, funding, fuel agreements, and island commissioning rehearsals before final equipment selection.
Common questions
Why do weak grids matter for mining gas turbines?
USP&E studies weak grids because low fault levels amplify every motor start and disturbance. Turbines on a weak feeder must ride through dips, provide reactive power and separate cleanly when the utility fails, otherwise they trip with the grid and leave your mill without power.
What does island mode require on a mine power plant?
USP&E designs island mode with a fast islanding scheme, governors and voltage regulators tuned for isolated operation and a load-shed table that drops non-essential loads before frequency collapses. Operators also need clear resynchronisation procedures for when the utility supply returns.
Can a remanufactured GE Frame 6B run a mine in island mode?
USP&E evaluates a remanufactured GE Frame 6B for island duty by checking its step-load capability, governor and excitation response to large motor starts. Many units perform well when paired with fast-responding engines, and controls status and inspection records are confirmed first.
Which USP&E offices support African mine power projects?
USP&E supports African mine power from Johannesburg and Cape Town, where engineering, protection studies and commissioning teams sit. London handles finance and contracts, Colorado Springs and Knoxville connect you to US equipment and engineering, and Wuxi supports China-made switchgear and balance-of-plant.
Has USP&E delivered mine power stations before?
USP&E rebuilt more than 80 MW of Cat CM32 engines and added 24 MW of new capacity for Barrick Gold at Loulo-Gounkoto in Mali, delivering a 104 MW station. USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
Is USP&E a broker for mining power equipment?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that studies your grid, supplies and installs turbines and engines, commissions islanding and protection and operates the plant, so one accountable team answers for your mine’s uptime.
How fast can USP&E respond to a grid study request?
USP&E can start as soon as you share utility data, a single-line diagram and your load list. Engineers in Johannesburg screen the connection and largest motor starts first, so timing depends mainly on data quality and how quickly the utility supplies its fault levels.
How should a mine practise island transfers?
USP&E recommends rehearsing island transfers at commissioning and then on a regular schedule agreed with your operations team. Each drill tests the islanding scheme, load shedding and resynchronisation, results are recorded and procedures are updated so operators act calmly during a real grid failure.
