Mining power guide

Africa Mine GT Fuel-Gas Scrubbing

Your mine’s gas may come from a pipeline, a CNG truck convoy or a wellhead blend that changes with the season. Your gas turbine generators do not care where it comes from, but they care a great deal about the liquids, solids and heavy hydrocarbons it carries.

If fuel gas reaches the turbine wet or dirty, the risk is fouled fuel valves, damaged nozzles and combustion trips when the pit is busiest. Each trip stops the mill, and repeated damage means unplanned hot-section work, lost production and a turbine nobody trusts.

USP&E as Your Guide on Mine Fuel Gas

We know how hard it is to control gas quality when the supply sits outside your fence. USP&E has guided energy projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified and work under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Start With What Is Really in Your Gas

Collect gas analyses over time, not just one sample: composition, water and hydrocarbon dew points, liquids carryover, solids, sulphur compounds and how all of these change with season, supplier and upstream offtakes. CNG and wellhead supplies swing more than pipeline gas, so plan for the worst week, not the average.

Compare that data against the turbine fuel specification. The gap between what arrives and what the turbine accepts defines your treatment train: knockout drums for slugs of liquid, coalescing filters for fine aerosols, particulate filters for solids and heaters to keep gas above its dew point all the way to the fuel nozzles.

Design the Scrubbing Train for Remote Operation

Remote mines need treatment that runs with little attention. Use duty and standby filter vessels so elements can be changed without stopping the turbine, automatic liquid drains with high-level alarms, and differential-pressure indication your operators can read from the control room. Size heaters so gas superheat holds even on cold nights and at low flow.

Put gas quality alarms, filter differential pressure and drain status on SCADA beside the turbine screens. Write a short fuel shed table so non-essential gas users drop first if supply quality or pressure falls. Natural gas engines on camp or auxiliary duty can share the treated header if it is sized for them.

Bridge With a Frame 6B and Plan for Growth

A remanufactured GE Frame 6B can carry base load while a permanent treatment skid is completed, provided its fuel system and nozzles are matched to your gas. Ask for fuel system records, nozzle condition and past gas specifications with the inspection scope, and compare used or new gas turbines on fuel flexibility as well as hours.

If your concession later hosts a compute campus, data-centre power plants will draw on the same gas supply. The planning reference is the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028. Reserve space for a second treatment train now, and one contractor can carry the campus into EPC and O&M.

Your path from first call to reliable power

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your gas analyses, supply contracts and outage costs under NDA. 2. Get a fuel treatment and turbine option set covering EPC and O&M. 3. Commission the scrubbing train, prove alarms and hand over to O&M.

  1. Map mine fuel-gas quality, scrubber duty, dew-point limits, and outage costs against candidate gas turbine generators.
  2. Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used or new gas turbines, natural gas engines, and a future modular block against the scrubbing matrix.
  3. Review current equipment in USP&E live inventory and request records, inspection findings, controls status, and logistics dimensions.
  4. Reserve civil and electrical interfaces for the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028.
  5. Document dew-point class, media change logic, SCADA scrubber alarms, fuel shed tables, operator training, spares, and O&M responsibilities in one matrix.
  6. Complete permits, funding, fuel agreements, and scrubbing commissioning rehearsals before final equipment selection.

Common questions

Why does fuel-gas scrubbing matter for mining gas turbines?

USP&E treats fuel gas scrubbing as protection for the turbine, because liquids, solids and heavy hydrocarbons damage fuel valves and nozzles and can trigger combustion trips. On a mine, each trip stops processing, and repeated damage brings unplanned hot-section work and lost production.

What gas data is needed to design a scrubbing train?

USP&E asks for gas analyses over several months, including composition, water and hydrocarbon dew points, liquids, solids and sulphur compounds, plus how supply changes by season and supplier. Designing for the worst realistic week keeps the turbine protected when quality swings.

Can a remanufactured GE Frame 6B share a mine scrubber train?

USP&E can connect a remanufactured GE Frame 6B to a shared treatment train when the header is sized for every user and gas reaches the turbine above its dew point. The unit’s fuel system records and nozzle condition are reviewed with the inspection scope first.

Where are USP&E offices that support mining power projects?

USP&E anchors mining projects in Johannesburg and Cape Town, where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit close to African sites. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi supports China supply chain and manufacturing.

Has USP&E delivered mining power projects before?

USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies include Resolute Mining’s 30 MW Syama station, which USP&E installed and operated, and Kinross Gold’s Tasiast backup station in Mauritania.

Is USP&E a broker for mining turbines?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power stations, so the team that designs your fuel treatment train is accountable for keeping the turbine supplied with clean, dry gas once your mine depends on it.

How fast can USP&E respond to a fuel gas review?

USP&E can start as soon as you share gas analyses, supply contracts and site details. A first gap assessment against the turbine fuel specification follows quickly, and the full timeline depends on data quality, equipment availability and the permits your site needs.

What should mining O&M cover for fuel-gas scrubbing?

USP&E includes filter element changes on differential pressure, drain checks, heater performance, gas sampling and alarm tests in mining O&M. Each task has a named role and frequency, so your operators act on a rising filter reading long before wet gas reaches the turbine.
