If the dew point climbs or a compressor trips during a busy shift, valves go soft, the fuel train hunts and the turbine can trip offline. The mill stops, the pit waits for power, and every hour of downtime is lost production your plan cannot recover.
USP&E as Your Guide on Mine Turbine Utilities
We understand how frustrating it is when a small auxiliary system takes down a large machine. USP&E has guided energy projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified and work under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Size Instrument Air Around Turbine Duty, Not Habit
Start with a demand table for every pneumatic consumer your gas turbine generators will add: fuel and bleed valves, purge systems, inlet filter pulse cleaning and any air-operated dampers. Add the existing plant ring, then size receivers so the turbine can ride through a compressor changeover without a pressure dip that its controls will notice.
Dryer duty matters as much as compressor capacity. Hot, humid pit seasons push moisture into lines, and desiccant towers that were adequate for a crusher plant can fall behind once turbine valves start cycling. Specify the dew point class you need at the turbine skid, not at the compressor house, and give the turbine a dedicated header or priority valve so plant leaks cannot starve it.
Build Redundancy and Alarms Your Night Shift Can Use
You want two independent air sources for any turbine you depend on: a duty compressor with an automatic standby, or a dedicated turbine compressor backed by the plant ring through a non-return valve. Test the changeover under load during commissioning, because a standby that has never been proven is only a hope.
Put dew point, header pressure and dryer tower status on the same SCADA screen as the turbine. Set alarm bands so operators see a drifting dryer hours before valves respond, and write a short load-shed table for non-critical pneumatics so the turbine keeps priority when air gets tight. Natural gas engines used for camp loads or black-start should be on the same air philosophy, or carry their own.
Bridge With a Frame 6B and Plan for Growth
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B can carry base load while a new compressor house or dryer train is finished, provided its own instrument-air interface is documented. Ask for the controls drawings, valve list and air consumption figures with the records and inspection scope, so the air system and the turbine are judged together. The same diligence applies when you compare used or new gas turbines from several sources.
If your concession may later host a compute campus, data-centre power plants will need air, water and electrical space too. The planning reference for that later block is the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028. Reserve room for a second compressor house now, and the same team can carry the campus into EPC and O&M.
Why owners choose USP&E

Your path from first call to reliable power
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your air demand table, dew point data and outage costs under NDA. 2. Get an engineered turbine and instrument-air option set covering EPC and O&M. 3. Commission, prove the compressor changeover and hand over to accountable O&M.
- Map mine instrument-air demand, dryer duty, dew-point limits, and outage costs against candidate gas turbine generators.
- Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used or new gas turbines, natural gas engines, and a future modular block against the air matrix.
- Review current equipment in USP&E live inventory and request records, inspection findings, controls status, and logistics dimensions.
- Reserve civil and electrical interfaces for the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028.
- Document dew-point class, backup compressor logic, SCADA air alarms, pneumatic shed tables, operator training, spares, and O&M responsibilities in one matrix.
- Complete permits, funding, fuel agreements, and instrument-air commissioning rehearsals before final equipment selection.
Common questions
Why does instrument air matter for mining gas turbines?
USP&E treats instrument air as part of the turbine, because fuel valves, bleed valves and guide vanes all depend on it. Wet or low-pressure air makes valves respond slowly, the fuel train becomes unstable and the unit can trip, which stops your mill and costs production you cannot recover later in the month.
What dew point should a mine turbine air system meet?
USP&E specifies the dew point at the turbine skid, using the turbine maker’s requirement and your site’s hottest and most humid season. The aim is to keep condensation out of valve actuators and small-bore lines under worst-case conditions, so dryer selection and receiver sizing follow from that number rather than from compressor house habit.
Can a remanufactured GE Frame 6B share a mine instrument-air ring?
USP&E can connect a remanufactured GE Frame 6B to a shared ring when the turbine has a dedicated header, priority valve and backup source. Its air consumption, valve list and controls drawings should be reviewed with the plant demand table first, so normal plant leaks or a compressor trip cannot starve the turbine.
Where does USP&E have offices that support mining power projects?
USP&E supports African mines from its Executive HQ in Johannesburg and its Cape Town office, where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit. London handles finance and contracts, Colorado Springs and Knoxville reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi covers China manufacturing, while project teams travel to site wherever your mine is.
Has USP&E delivered mining power projects before?
USP&E has delivered mining power before, including supplying 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also cover Barrick Gold’s 104 MW Loulo-Gounkoto refurbishment in Mali and Resolute Mining’s 30 MW Syama station, which USP&E installed and operated.
Is USP&E a broker for mining turbines?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power stations, so the team that sizes your compressors, dryers and turbine interfaces is the same team accountable for keeping the unit online once your mine depends on it.
How fast can USP&E respond to a mine power request?
USP&E starts as soon as you share your load profile, air demand table and site location. Engineers in Johannesburg review the turbine and utility case while project teams check logistics and spares, and the timeline then depends on your data, equipment availability and permits rather than on a sales queue.
What should mining O&M cover for instrument air?
USP&E builds instrument-air checks into turbine O&M: dew point trending, dryer tower changeovers, receiver drains, compressor standby tests and alarm verification. Each check has a named role and a frequency, so your night shift knows exactly who acts when header pressure drops or a dryer alarm appears before the turbine is affected.
