Mining power guide

Africa Mine Island-Mode GT for Reliable Power

You run a mine that cannot lean on the grid. Your crushers, mills and underground fans hang on a power station you own, often a long way from the nearest spare part, and a single large motor start can drag your frequency down.

If the island design is wrong, one feeder trip becomes a cascade: the plant goes dark, the ore stops moving and the board asks why output fell short. Every unplanned outage is lost production you never get back.

USP&E as Your Guide for Island-Mode Mine Power

We know how lonely it feels to carry a mine’s power on your own balance sheet. USP&E has guided energy projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Design Your Island Before You Choose Turbines

Your islanded station has to hold frequency and voltage while mills, conveyors and hoists step on and off. That means governors, excitation, spinning reserve, load-shed tables and black-start sequences belong in the same design file as the machine choice. Packaged gas turbine generators that look right on a datasheet can still trip when a large mill motor restarts after a fault.

Start with your real load profile: the largest single step, the motor-start current, the outage cost per hour and the fuel you can actually land on site. With those numbers in hand, used or new gas turbines, reciprocating sets and storage can be compared on duty, not on brochure ratings.

Bridge With a Remanufactured GE Frame 6B

A remanufactured GE Frame 6B can carry your base load while gas treatment, switchgear or a later block is finished. You should see the records, inspection scope, controls condition, preservation history and transport plan before you commit, because remote logistics punish surprises.

Natural gas engines often suit camp loads, essential auxiliaries or a black-start role beside the main turbines. The aim is to give every machine a clear island job your operators can sustain through rainy seasons, fuel interruptions and ore-body changes.

Phase Toward Modular FX-45 Blocks

As pits deepen and processing grows, your concession may also host compute loads. Mines that supply a co-located campus start talking about data-centre power plants beside plant loads, and that conversation is easier when you have reserved space for gas yards, electrical bays, cranes and roads.

The planning reference for that later block is the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028. If the campus grows, the same team can carry the work into EPC and O&M so engineering, construction and operations stay on one accountable path.

Your path from first call to reliable power

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your load profile, fuel data and outage costs under NDA. 2. Get an engineered island option set covering assets, EPC and O&M. 3. Energise, rehearse black-start and hand over to accountable O&M.

  1. Define your island loads, fuel plan, frequency, spinning reserve and outage consequences.
  2. Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used or new gas turbines, natural gas engines and a future modular block against island duty.
  3. Review current equipment in USP&E live inventory and request records, inspection findings, controls status and logistics dimensions.
  4. Reserve civil and electrical interfaces for the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028.
  5. Test black-start, load-shed, protection, operator training, spares and O&M responsibilities in a single matrix.
  6. Close permits, funding, fuel agreements and commissioning rehearsals before final equipment selection.

Common questions

Why does island mode matter for mining gas turbines?

USP&E treats island mode as the core design case because an off-grid mine has no utility to absorb a mill start or a feeder trip. Frequency, voltage, spinning reserve and load-shed logic must be engineered with the turbines, otherwise one fault can black out the whole process plant and stop production.

Can a remanufactured GE Frame 6B run islanded on a mine?

USP&E evaluates a remanufactured GE Frame 6B for island duty when the records, inspection scope, controls, fuel train and load steps all line up. It can carry base load while other blocks are built, but it is selected on evidence and island studies, never from photographs or a nameplate alone.

Where does USP&E have offices that support mining power projects?

USP&E supports African mines from its Executive HQ in Johannesburg and its Cape Town office, where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit. London structures finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi covers China manufacturing, while project teams travel to site across the 85+ countries USP&E has guided.

Has USP&E delivered mining power projects before?

USP&E has delivered this kind of work before, including supplying 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also cover Barrick Gold’s 104 MW Loulo-Gounkoto refurbishment in Mali and Resolute Mining’s 30 MW Syama station, which USP&E installed and operated.

Is USP&E a broker?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power stations, so the team that recommends your island architecture is the same team accountable for making it start, synchronise and stay online for your mine.

How fast can USP&E respond to a mine power request?

USP&E starts work as soon as you share your load profile, fuel data and site location. Engineers in Johannesburg review the island case while project teams check logistics and spares, and timing then depends on your data quality, equipment availability and permits rather than on a sales queue.

Do natural gas engines have a role on an islanded mine?

USP&E often pairs natural gas engines with turbines on islanded mines. Engines can cover camp loads, essential auxiliaries, black-start or part-load periods where a large turbine runs inefficiently, which gives operators a flexible fleet and protects the process plant when one machine is down for maintenance.

What should mining O&M cover for island mode?

USP&E builds island O&M around black-start drills, load-shed verification, protection testing, operator training, critical spares and planned maintenance. Each alarm and each island event is assigned to a named role, so your night shift knows exactly who acts when frequency drifts or a feeder trips.
