Mining power guide

Africa Mine GT Spares Depot Planning

You run a mine where a failed bearing, igniter or control card can stop your power station, and the nearest replacement may sit in a warehouse on another continent. Your crews are skilled, but they cannot fix what they do not have on the shelf.

Without a deliberate spares strategy, one failure becomes a long outage: aircraft charters, customs delays and days of lost production while your mill stands idle. Carry too much stock and you tie up cash in parts that rust; carry too little and you risk the whole operation.

USP&E as Your Guide to Spares That Are There When You Need Them

We know the sinking feeling of a critical part stuck at a border while your pit waits. USP&E has guided energy projects in 85+ countries, and our 400+ engineers and project managers plan spares for sites where the next shop is far away. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Rank Your Parts: Critical, Insurance and Consumable

Start by ranking every part you could need. Consumables such as filters, gaskets and oil are used on a schedule and should always be on site in quantity. Critical spares are parts whose failure stops a unit and whose lead time is long: igniters, fuel valves, control cards, bearings and seals. Insurance spares are the expensive, rarely needed items such as a rotor or a generator exciter, where one failure without a spare could cost you months.

Rank each part by consequence of failure, lead time and likelihood. A simple matrix shows you which items must sit in your site store, which can sit in a regional hub and which can be sourced when needed. Review the ranking every year as your fleet, suppliers and routes change.

Balance Your Site Store, Regional Hub and the Road Between

Your site store holds consumables and the critical spares you need within hours. A regional hub can hold slower-moving critical and insurance spares shared across several sites, if the road, border and customs route between them is reliable. Test that route before you rely on it, including paperwork for temporary imports and duty.

Store parts properly: dry, clean, labelled and recorded in a maintenance system that shows quantity, location and condition. Electronics need climate control, rubber seals have shelf lives and bearings need protection from vibration. A part that has degraded on the shelf is worse than no part, because it gives you false confidence.

Share Common Parts Across Frame 6B Bridges, Engines and Future Blocks

If you run a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, used or new gas turbines and natural gas engines together, look for common parts: filters, instruments, relays and control cards. Standardising saves stock and simplifies training. Your gas turbine generators will still need their own critical spares, especially hot-section and fuel system parts.

Plan your depot for growth. Modular FX-45 blocks (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028, will add their own spares lists. If your concession hosts compute loads, data-centre power plants can share the same spares system.

Your path from first call to reliable power

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your fleet list, failure history and site location under NDA. 2. Receive a ranked spares list with site and hub stocking plans. 3. Stock, record and maintain spares with accountable O&M support.

  1. List every turbine, engine, and auxiliary on the mine with its failure history, current spares, and supplier lead times.
  2. Rank parts as critical, insurance, or consumable for a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used or new gas turbines, and natural gas engines on one register.
  3. Check USP&E live inventory for candidate units and spares, and ask which parts each remanufacturing scope renewed.
  4. Reserve depot space and register lines for the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028.
  5. Agree site-store and regional-hub roles, bonded import paperwork, and on-call transport with named owners.
  6. Stock, label, and link the depot to the maintenance system before commissioning, then review it after every outage.

Common questions

Why do remote mines need a deliberate gas turbine spares strategy?

USP&E plans spares deliberately because remote mines cannot wait weeks for a critical part. A failed igniter, valve or control card can stop a unit, and without the right stock on site or nearby, one failure becomes a long outage and lost production.

How should mine spares be ranked?

USP&E ranks spares as consumable, critical or insurance by consequence of failure, lead time and likelihood. Consumables stay on site in quantity, critical spares sit within hours of the plant and expensive insurance spares may be shared across sites in a regional hub.

Where are USP&E’s offices that support African mining spares and power?

USP&E supports African mines from Johannesburg and Cape Town, where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision. London handles financing and contract structure, Colorado Springs and Knoxville secure US equipment and parts, and Wuxi keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.

Has USP&E delivered and supported mining power in Africa before?

USP&E has supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies include the Golden Pride controls upgrade in Tanzania and an O&M recovery in Mali that restored availability to about 95%.

Is USP&E a broker for mining spares?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, installs, commissions and operates power stations, so the team ranking your spares is also accountable for keeping your units available when a part fails.

How fast can USP&E respond to a spares emergency at a mine?

USP&E can start locating parts and planning logistics as soon as you report the failure and share unit details. Response time then depends on where the part is held, flight and road access and customs clearance, which is why a ranked spares plan matters so much.

Can spares be shared between turbines and engines?

USP&E looks for common parts such as filters, instruments, relays and control cards across turbines and engines. Standardising reduces stock and simplifies training, but each turbine still needs its own critical hot-section and fuel system spares held close to the plant.

How should spare parts be stored at a remote mine?

USP&E stores spares dry, clean, labelled and recorded in a maintenance system showing quantity, location and condition. Electronics need climate control, seals have shelf lives and bearings need protection from vibration, because degraded spares give false confidence when you need them.
