Mining power guide

Africa Mine GT Water Scarcity Cooling

You run a mine where every cubic metre of borehole water is already spoken for by the process plant, the camp and the village down the road. Now you are planning gas turbines, and the cooling design will decide whether they deliver nameplate power in the dry season or quietly derate when you need them most.

Get the water balance wrong and your turbines trip or derate at peak ambient, water trucks become a line item nobody budgeted, and lost tonnes pile up while the mill waits. Community trust is at risk too, because a power plant that drains the aquifer will not keep its social licence for long.

USP&E Helps You Design Cooling Around Your Water

We understand that on a water-scarce mine, power and water are one problem. USP&E has guided energy projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers have powered remote African mines where makeup water, heat and dust all shape the plant. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Let the Water Balance Choose Your Cooling Architecture

Start with a water balance before you choose a machine. List borehole yields across wet and dry seasons, process-water reclaim, camp demand and any community allocation, then subtract what the plant already uses. What remains is the real makeup budget for cooling, lube oil coolers, evaporative inlet cooling and washing, and it is often far smaller than a vendor datasheet assumes.

With that number fixed, compare dry air-cooled heat exchangers, hybrid wet-dry cells and closed-loop radiators. Dry systems use almost no water but need more plot area and fan power, and they lose capacity on the hottest afternoons. Hybrid cells save water most of the year and switch to spray only at peak ambient. Your gas turbine generators should be rated against the cooling you can actually sustain, not the wet nameplate.

Design for the worst day, not the average one. Use local dry-bulb and wet-bulb extremes, dust loading and altitude, and ask what output you keep when a borehole pump fails during a heatwave. That single scenario often decides fan redundancy, cooler sizing and whether you need a second makeup source.

Bridge With a Remanufactured GE Frame 6B While Studies Finish

Cooling studies, borehole tests and permits can take months, and your mill may not wait. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B can serve as bridge capacity if its cooling package matches your water budget, so check whether the unit ships with fin-fan lube oil coolers or needs a wet circuit, and confirm inspection records, controls status and preservation history before you commit.

For camp loads, auxiliaries and water pumping, natural gas engines with radiator cooling can run on very little makeup water and keep essential services alive if a turbine is down. Comparing used or new gas turbines against engines on a litres-per-megawatt-hour basis usually shows where each fits on your concession.

Reserve Space Now for Modular FX-45 Growth

As pits deepen and processing expands, your load will grow, and some mining regions are also attracting data-centre power plants that will want the same gas and the same scarce water. Reserve plot area for extra dry-cooler banks, pipe racks, gas treatment and electrical bays now, so the next block is not boxed in by an undersized water loop.

The planning reference for later blocks is the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028. USP&E can carry cooling, turbines and electrical yards into EPC and O&M or mine O&M, so the people who designed your water balance also answer for it in operation, with makeup meters, fan status and ambient alarms visible on SCADA.

Your path from first call to reliable power

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your water balance, ambient data, load profile and gas supply under NDA. 2. Get a cooling-matched turbine and engine option set with EPC and O&M scope. 3. Build, commission and operate with makeup water metered and owned by one team.

  1. Map mine water sources, wet-bulb extremes, makeup limits, load profile, and outage costs against candidate gas turbine generators.
  2. Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used or new gas turbines, natural gas engines, and a future modular block against the water-cooling matrix.
  3. Review current equipment in USP&E live inventory and request records, inspection findings, controls status, and logistics dimensions.
  4. Reserve civil and electrical interfaces for the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028.
  5. Document dry/hybrid cooling class, makeup meters, SCADA alarms, load-shed tables, operator training, spares, and O&M responsibilities in one matrix.
  6. Complete permits, funding, fuel agreements, and commissioning rehearsals before final equipment selection.

Common questions

Why does water scarcity matter for mining gas turbines?

USP&E treats water as a design gate because cooling, lube oil coolers, inlet cooling and washing all consume makeup water. On a water-scarce mine the plant competes with the mill and the community, so a design that assumes unlimited water will derate or trip during the dry season.

Should a mine choose dry or hybrid cooling for gas turbines?

USP&E chooses between dry and hybrid cooling from your real makeup budget and ambient extremes. Dry coolers use almost no water but need more space and lose output on hot afternoons. Hybrid cells save water most of the year and add spray only at peak temperatures, protecting capacity when demand is highest.

Can a remanufactured GE Frame 6B run on a water-scarce mine?

USP&E evaluates a remanufactured GE Frame 6B for water-scarce duty by checking its cooling package, inlet filtration and auxiliary water needs against your budget. Fin-fan lube oil coolers and dry auxiliary systems make many units suitable as bridge power while permanent cooling and gas treatment are completed.

Which USP&E offices support African mining power projects?

USP&E runs African mining work from its Executive HQ in Johannesburg and from Cape Town, where engineering, design and commissioning teams sit. London supports finance and contracts, Colorado Springs and Knoxville connect you to US equipment and engineering, and Wuxi supports China fabrication and supply chain for coolers and switchgear.

Has USP&E delivered power for African mines before?

USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. At Resolute Mining’s Golden Pride mine in Tanzania, a new USP&E controls system integrated two engine brands in one plant and eliminated harmonic distortion on the mine network.

Is USP&E a broker for mining power equipment?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers the cooling and water balance, supplies and installs the turbines or engines, commissions the plant and operates it, so one accountable team answers for your mine’s power from study to daily running.

How fast can USP&E respond to a mining cooling study request?

USP&E starts reviewing as soon as you share water balance figures, ambient data, load profile and gas supply terms. Engineers in Johannesburg and Cape Town screen cooling and equipment options first, so early answers depend mainly on how complete your site data is and how quickly borehole tests can be confirmed.

What should mine O&M track on a water-scarce plant?

USP&E builds water-scarce O&M around makeup water meters, cooler fan status, approach temperatures, inlet filter differential pressure and ambient alarms on SCADA. Load-shed tables reflect reduced capability when hybrid cells run dry, and every water assumption has a named engineer, so operators act before output falls.
