If you plan at sea-level ratings, the shortfall shows up as load shedding, a tripped feeder or a mill that cannot restart. That means lost tonnes, missed guidance and a board asking why the power station you paid for cannot carry the plant you built.
USP&E as Your Guide for High-Elevation Mine Power
We understand how frustrating it is to discover derate after commissioning. USP&E has guided energy projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Size Your Station to the Air You Actually Have
Every turbine loses output as altitude rises and ambient temperature climbs, because the compressor moves less mass of air. Your design file should state site elevation, the hottest credible ambient, inlet filter losses and humidity, then convert nameplate ratings into a summer capability curve. That curve, not the brochure figure, is what your load-shed table and spinning reserve must be built around.
Start with the mine’s real demand: the largest motor start, the mill restart after a trip, ventilation that cannot stop, and the cost of every hour of lost production. With those numbers, used or new gas turbines, reciprocating sets and storage can be compared on their derated duty, and you will know how many machines you really need to hold N+1 on the worst day.
Bridge With a Remanufactured GE Frame 6B While Studies Mature
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B can carry base load while altitude studies, gas treatment or a later block are completed. Ask for the records, reman scope, controls condition and preservation history, and make sure the inlet house and filtration are sized for your elevation rather than the original coastal site. Remote logistics make every surprise expensive, so the transport plan belongs in the same file.
Natural gas engines often hold their rating better at altitude and can cover camp loads, essential auxiliaries or black-start duty beside your turbines. Giving each machine a clear job, with derate assumptions written down, lets your operators understand why your station behaves differently in January and July.
Plan Modular FX-45 Blocks and Compute Loads Above the Pit
As pits deepen and processing expands, some concessions start hosting compute loads, and the conversation moves to data-centre power plants alongside your plant. Reserve space now for inlet systems sized to altitude, gas treatment, electrical yards, cooling interfaces, roads and crane access, so a later block does not force you to rebuild the first one.
The planning reference for that later capacity is the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028. If a campus grows on your concession, the same team can carry the work into EPC and O&M so derate curves, protection settings and operating procedures stay consistent across every block.
Why owners choose USP&E
USP&E is a full-service engineering, EPC and O&M company, not a broker. One team designs, builds and runs your plant, so nothing falls between contracts.

USP&E took over a 100+ MW plant of 15 Caterpillar CM32 engines, restored availability to about 95% and cut maintenance cost per engine by 66%.
Your path from first call to reliable power
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share elevation, ambient data, load profile and outage costs under NDA. 2. Receive a derated option set covering assets, EPC and O&M. 3. Commission against real summer curves and hand over to accountable O&M.
- Map mine elevation, ambient extremes, inlet losses, load profile, and outage costs against candidate gas turbine generators.
- Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used or new gas turbines, natural gas engines, and a future modular block against the derate matrix.
- Review current equipment in USP&E live inventory and request records, inspection findings, controls status, and logistics dimensions.
- Reserve civil and electrical interfaces for the modular FX-45 (45 MW OCGT or 108 MW CCGT in a 2×1, 50 or 60 Hz), with capacity slots from 2028.
- Document derate curves, SCADA alarms, load-shed tables, operator training, spares, and O&M responsibilities in one matrix.
- Complete permits, funding, fuel agreements, and commissioning rehearsals before final equipment selection.
Common questions
Why does altitude derate matter for mining gas turbines?
USP&E treats altitude derate as a core design input because thinner, hotter air cuts the output of every turbine. A station sized at sea-level ratings can fall short on summer afternoons at elevation, forcing load shedding on mills and crushers and costing production that the mine never recovers.
Can a remanufactured GE Frame 6B run well at high elevation?
USP&E evaluates a remanufactured GE Frame 6B for high-elevation duty by converting its rating to your site conditions and checking inlet filtration, controls and cooling. It can carry base load as a bridge, but the derated curve, not the nameplate, decides how many units you need.
Where does USP&E have offices that support African mining projects?
USP&E supports African mines from its Executive HQ in Johannesburg and its Cape Town office, which hold engineering, project controls and commissioning support. London structures finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville connect you to US equipment supply, and Wuxi covers China manufacturing, with site teams travelling to your concession.
Has USP&E delivered mining power projects before?
USP&E has delivered mining power across Africa, including supplying 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies include Resolute Mining’s 30 MW Syama station in Mali and the Kinross Tasiast backup power station in Mauritania.
Is USP&E a broker?
USP&E is not a broker. As a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, USP&E engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power stations, so the people who calculate your altitude derate are the same people accountable for your station meeting its summer capability once it is running.
How fast can USP&E respond to a high-elevation power request?
USP&E can begin reviewing your case as soon as you send elevation, ambient records, load data and fuel information. Engineers in Johannesburg build a first derate picture while logistics and equipment availability are checked, and overall timing then depends on data quality, permits and your equipment route.
Do natural gas engines have a role on high mines?
USP&E often pairs natural gas engines with turbines on high-elevation mines because engines can hold rating well and suit part-load or black-start duty. They cover camps and essential auxiliaries, giving operators a flexible fleet when a turbine is down for inspection or summer derate bites.
What should mining O&M cover for altitude derate?
USP&E builds altitude-aware O&M around inlet filter monitoring, derate alarms on SCADA, seasonal load-shed reviews, compressor washing and operator training. Each alarm has a named responder, so the night shift knows what to do when ambient temperature climbs and available capacity drops below plan.
