African infrastructure rarely waits for perfect civil works. Ports expand in phases, mines open satellite pits, contractors need power for camps and crushers, and utilities need temporary capacity while permanent stations catch up. Containerised and modular packages install fast when the pads, fuel and high-voltage connection are ready.
A container is more than a box
- Engine or turbine and generator, rated for continuous or bridge duty at your site’s heat and altitude.
- Fuel and starting systems: day tanks, filtration, batteries or air start, and contingency stock.
- Switchgear and controls for paralleling, load sharing and protection across the fleet.
- Cooling and ventilation that still work in dust and heat.
- Commissioning records that travel with the container if it is relocated.
Small standby or modular station?
Small standby
One or two sets for essential loads during short outages. Simple, but not built to carry production.
Modular station blocks
Several containerised units paralleled as a power station, with N+1 redundancy, shared fuel and one control system.
Growth path
Start with containers and add larger engine or turbine blocks later on the same electrical standard.
Where modular blocks fit
Ports and logistics hubs, mine satellite pits and camps, construction power for large projects, utility gap-filling and industrial expansions all suit modular blocks. The common thread: capacity is needed fast, and the site may change shape over the next few years.
Plan for relocation from day one
If the pad may move, write the relocation criteria into the EPC contract: foundations, cable routes, fuel connections and commissioning tests that can be repeated at the next site. Keep voltage, frequency and control philosophy the same across phases so nothing is stranded.
Shared fuel farms need discipline. One contaminated delivery can trip a whole pad of containers, so sampling, fuel polishing and day-tank housekeeping are part of USP&E commissioning and O&M, not extras.
Proof from recent work
Mining · Tanzania
Perseus Mining, Nyanzaga Gold Project
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised gensets for the Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
Mining · Mauritania
Kinross Gold, Mauritania
USP&E delivered a Caterpillar backup power station for Kinross Gold’s large-scale mining operation.
Mining · Mali
Resolute Mining, Syama
USP&E installed and operated a 30 MW Caterpillar power station for the Syama gold mine.
Why owners choose USP&E
USP&E is a full-service engineering, EPC and O&M company, not a broker. One team designs, builds and runs your plant, so nothing falls between contracts.
Common questions
Are containerised power plants only temporary?
No. Many run for years as permanent stations. The difference is in the design: continuous ratings, proper fuel systems, maintenance access and O&M support.
Can gas turbines be containerised?
Yes. Aeroderivative and smaller industrial turbines are available in packaged, trailer-mounted or modular forms. USP&E can compare them with engine options for your site.
Where do we start?
Share your load, site, fuel and timeline with a USP&E engineer and browse diesel generators in USP&E inventory.
